I cannot agree more with Mark Gatt (The Sunday Times, September 19). The annual sheer waste of freshly cut stone blocks to be used as sinkers for lampuki floats should no longer be tolerated.

Six years ago, I wrote a letter on this senseless waste, which was published in this newspaper, but nothing has changed.

As far as I know (and I stand to be corrected), stone is the only mineral available in commercial quantities in Malta and it is simply unbelievable that we are dumping it like this.

I am sure that with some thought an alternative cheap material could easily be found to be used as sinkers, such as blocks made from low-grade concrete. (These sinkers need only last for the lampuki season.)

If for some reason it is argued that there is no alternative to stone blocks (which I will never believe), the use of old stone blocks from demolished buildings, which are also unscrupulously dumped in very large quantities, should be considered.

I hope that this time these letters do not fall on deaf ears and I appeal to the Resources Authority to start now and do whatever is necessary to put a stop to this wasteful practice as from the next lampuki season.
