The committee of the Inter Supporters’ Club Malta (ISC) are in advanced talks with the administration of the Serie A giants to bring over the trophies won by the Nerazzurri last season.

Sources have told The Times that the ISC are very upbeat about their chances of receiving the green light to fly the trophies over to Malta following positive discussions with top officials of the Italian champions.

Season 2009/10 was the most successful in Inter’s history as the team, led by Portuguese coach Jose Mourinho, now at Real Madrid, completed a treble of Serie A, Italian Cup and Champions League. Inter capped an extraordinary year by lifting the World Club Cup trophy in December.

It is believed that the hard-working committee of the ISC, one of the largest supporters’ organisations on the Maltese islands, are hopeful of bringing three, possibly all four, of the prestigious cups in the coming months, probably in May.

This is not the first time that a local supporters’ branch of a top European club are engaged in efforts to get important trophies to Malta for the benefit of their numerous members.

In 2009, the Manchester United Supporters’ Club underlined their excellent relationship with the Old Trafford giants by hosting three cups, the Premier League, Champions League and Club World Cup.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson and players Gary Neville, now retired, Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes, also attended a grand reception at the Mediterranean Conference Centre, held on February 10, to mark the MUSC’s 50th anniversary.

Ten years before, the MUSC had arguably pulled off the first ‘cup coup’ by bringing over the Premier League, FA Cup and European Cup after United became the first English club to win the treble in 1999.

The local Liverpool Supporters’ Club also had the privilege of parading the Champions League Trophy and UEFA Super Cup in Malta in 2006.

Two years earlier, the members of the Arsenal Supporters’ Club Malta had had the opportunity to cast their eyes on the Premier League trophy, Community Shield and the Premiership Gold Trophy, awarded to the Gunners for going through a whole season unbeaten.
