Mr and Mrs Smith are terribly middle-of-the-road.

They live at The Cottage on the High Street and have two cars parked in the drive - one is a Ford Fiesta - and, of course they do not smoke.

A new study by insurers Aviva gives a snapshot of the average Briton - and the most common surname is Smith.

Meanwhile, the average couple is most likely to live in a three-bedroom detached house, built around the turn of the 20th century and nestled between their neighbours, Mr and Mrs Jones at Rose Cottage and Mr and Mrs Williams at The Bungalow.

The "Smiths" have one bathroom and usually holiday in Spain.

David Tyers, director of marketing at Aviva, said certain things had changed very little.

"Who would have thought that in the days of loft extensions and exotic holiday destinations the good old fashioned "Cottage" would still be the most common house name and Spain still top of our holiday list?" he said.

"In some ways it's comforting to know that over the past decade some things have remained very much the same."

In a parallel survey, the average Brit was revealed to be an early riser - 50 per cent of us get up for work between 6 and 7 a.m., and commute by car.

Most tend not to pop out for air at lunchtime, with 27 per cent of office workers heading to the canteen or the kitchen for a snack.

And while more than 20 per cent of professionals eat sandwiches at their desk, more than seven per cent do not stop for lunch at all, according to the findings.

When it comes to relaxation, the average person enjoys time at home with around a third of Brits (33 per cent) spending more than 2,000 hours there every year when they are not asleep.
