GasanMamo Insurance is supporting the ‘Adopt a notary’ initiative by sponsoring one of the notarial deeds in desperate need of restoration.
There are about 17,000 volumes in the Notarial Archives, many of which having been heavily damaged over the years.
The notary whose works are being restored thanks to GasanMamo is Placido Abela (1557 – 1595) who, apart from being a well-established notary, was also heavily involved in education and taught grammar. He occupied official posts in both the secular and ecclesiastical sectors.
Notary Abela’s clients included several Knights, including Grand Master Jean de Valette.
Since he was the appointed notary in the sale of land during the initial stages of the building of Valletta, his notarial deeds shed fascinating facts on the allotment of land in this early development stage of the capital and is considered to be of utmost importance to the history of urban planning.
