The Institute of Masonry and Construction Research promotes research in all aspects of masonry and in related aspects of the construction industry, relevant to Malta. It is particularly active in the preservation and restoration of stone monuments and in this regard has participated in research projects in collaboration with local and international organisations, studying the deterioration and conservation of stone and other building materials.

Studies involving the characterisation of the local Globigerina Limestone are also carried out.

The Institute is also active in areas related to structural masonry, particularly arched and vaulted structures, in the area of mineral resource assessment, the area of repair and strengthening of structures and in the area of numerical modelling of masonry structures. It runs a biennial postgraduate diploma and degree course (M.Sc.) in Conservation Technology for Masonry Buildings.
