A police inspector was injured after he was assaulted by a driver following a road check near Mdina this morning.

The inspector stopped the BMW vehicle with foreign number-plates near the roundabout known as Ta' Srina around 11.30am to verify the documentation.

The inspector, who was accompanied by two other officers, is receiving medical attention though his injuries are not considered serious.

The driver, a 50-year-old Maltese national from Mqabba, has been arrested.

According to the police, the driver became aggressive with everyone on site, including his wife who was seated inside the vehicle. After being dragged out of the car, the driver was seen with blood stains on his face, probably following the punch up with the police.

The incident caused traffic jams until the situation was resolved. Ironically the incident happened close to a stall selling Valentine's Day items.
