The 11-year-old twin girls who were injured in a hit-and-run accident last month have been released from hospital and are back home.

Rebecca Falzon and her twin, Sarah Marie, 11, were crossing the road on April 28 at 7.15 p.m., after their Christian doctrine class, when they were hit by a van.

Sources said CCTV footage showed Sarah attempting to get up and reach her sister, only for her broken leg to give way. Instead, she began crawling to reach Rebecca, who was unconscious.

Rebecca was in intensive care for a few days after which she was transferred to Fairyland, the children's ward, near her sister. Sarah underwent surgery to her leg, which was broken in the accident.

The twins were released from hospital a few days ago after spending almost a month in treatment.

Maximilian Ciantar, 20, of Marsa, has been charged over the hit-and-run after the CCTV footage helped the police identify the van, which was tracked down a few days after the accident. He was accused of dangerous driving and speeding.

The court was told he had taken heroin that morning and was driving without a licence and insurance cover.
