Former world number two Tommy Haas is expected to be fit for this month's Australian Open despite pulling out of the Hopman Cup on Thursday with a groin injury.

An MRI scan yesterday revealed a minor tear and the German will miss next week's Medibank International in Sydney, although he is expected to recover for the year's first grand slam event beginning in Melbourne on January 17.

Haas suffered the injury in the second set of his match against Argentine Guillermo Coria on Thursday and though he played on for one more game, his movement was hampered and he decided to quit.

The German, whose ranking has improved to 17 thanks to a strong comeback season in 2004 after a 14-month absence following shoulder surgery, reached the semi-finals at the Australian Open in 2002.
