Annual inflation in Malta last months reached 2.7 per cent, a 0.4 per cent increase over the August. However, despite the significant increase, Eurostat said that Malta's inflation is still the fifth lowest in the euro area.

Estonia's was the highest in September at 5.4 per cent.

The euro area's annual rate of inflation in September peaked to 3 per cent, an increase of 0.5 per cent over August.

Eurostat said that the main components with the highest annual rates in September 2011 were transport (5.9 per cent), housing (5 per cent) and alcohol & tobacco (3.7 per cent), while the lowest annual rates were observed for communications (-1.9 per cent), recreation & culture (0.5 per cent) and household equipment (1.3 per cent).

Concerning the detailed sub-indices, fuels for transport (+0.55 percentage points), heating oil (+0.19) and electricity (+0.12) had the largest upward impacts on the headline rate, while telecommunications (-0.16), vegetables (-0.11) and rents (-0.10) had the biggest downward impacts.
