The Malta Stock Exchange share index increased by 35.72 points or 1.25 per cent over the week and now stands at 2,900.077.

Bank of Valletta shares increased a total of 12c7 (3.13 per cent) over the week, opening Monday's session at Lm4.053 and closing that of yesterday at Lm4.18. Turnover amounted to 41,111 shares changing hands over 70 deals. Following yesterday's trading session 627 shares at Lm4.161 and 50 shares at Lm4.18 were the best unsatisfied bids and offers respectively.

Trading in HSBC Bank opened the week at Lm7.50 on Monday, went down to Lm7.45, before going up again to close at Lm7.489 yesterday. Turnover amounted to 20,360 shares changing hands over 26 deals. Following yesterday's trading session 565 shares at Lm7.40 and 1,665 shares at Lm7.489 remained unsatisfied as yesterday's session ended.

Maltacom shares lost 1c5 during the week to end yesterday's session at Lm1.440 after opening at Lm1.455 on Tuesday. Total turnover amounted to 28,163 shares changing hands over 21 deals. As yesterday's session drew to a close, bids for 2,000 shares at Lm1.431 and 10,000 shares at Lm1.45 remained outstanding.

In a company announcement issued yesterday, the board of directors of Maltacom p.l.c. resolved to guarantee the company's respective part of a loan which is to be issued by First International Merchant Bank p.l.c. (FIMBANK) to Datatrak Nigeria Limited, a company in which Datatrak Mena Limited, a fully owned subsidiary of Datatrak Holding p.l.c., holds a 30 per cent interest. Maltacom p.l.c. owns 30 per cent of Datatrak Holdings p.l.c.

In another company announcement issued on Wednesday, the board of directors of International Hotel Investments p.l.c. stated that they will be meeting on Wednesday, October 13, to approve the financial statements for the period ended June 30, 2004.

The other equities which traded during the week appear below, followed by the range in which trading took place; 675 Lombard Bank shares at Lm4.25; 6,960 Middlesea Insurance shares between Lm2.13 and Lm2.05; 500 Suncrest Hotels shares at Lm0.329; 63,806 International Hotels Investment shares between €0.77 and €0.75; 76,127 Malta International Airport shares between Lm1.05 and Lm 1; 13,595 Global Financial Services shares between Lm1.100 and Lm0.99.

Total Malta Government Stock turnover amounted to a nominal value of Lm296,000 being traded in 53 deals over 21 different stocks. Trading over the week in corporate bonds was made up of a total value of Lm311,919.
