The Malta Stock Exchange Share Index decreased by 8.53 points or 0.3 per cent over the week and now stands at 2,847.703.

Bank of Valletta plc opened trading on Monday at Lm4.12, went down to touch Lm3.98 on Thursday before going up again to end yesterday's session at Lm4. Total turnover amounted to 14,456 shares changing hands over 29 deals. Following close of business yesterday, best bids for 1,500 shares at Lm3.91 and best offers for 2,068 shares at Lm4 remained outstanding.

HSBC shares opened the week at Lm7.23 on Monday and went on to close at Lm7.26 as yesterday's session came to an end. Total turnover amounted to 33,900 shares changing hands over 30 deals. Following close of business yesterday, 700 shares at Lm7.26 and 5,500 shares at Lm7.30 were the best unsatisfied bids and offers respectively.

The price of Maltacom plc increased by 1.26 per cent during the week. Trading opened the week at Lm1.511 on Monday and went on to close at Lm1.53 yesterday. Total turnover amounted to 27,170 shares changing hands over 34 deals. As yesterday's session drew to a close 2,000 shares at Lm1.517 and 4,150 shares at Lm1.53 were the best unsatisfied bids and offers respectively.

In a company announcement issued yesterday, the Board of Directors of Maltacom plc published the group's Financial Statements for the six months period ended June 30. These showed a turnover figure of Lm26,947,000 (period ended June 3: Lm27 million), profit after tax amounting to Lm4,051,000 (period ended June 3: Lm3.3 million) and earnings per share of 4c0 (period ended June 3: 3c2).

On Monday, Fimbank plc announced that Marcel Cassar has been appointed executive vice president and chief financial officer. He will also be part of the company's Executive Committee and other sub-committees of the Board of Directors. Mr Cassar was formerly general manager of Lombard Bank Malta plc.

The other equities which traded during the week appear below, followed by the range in which trading took place; 1,410 Lombard Bank shares at Lm4.20; 735 Middlesea Insurance shares between Lm2.010 and Lm2; 3,620 Simonds Farsons Cisk shares between Lm1.20 and Lm1.19; 300 International Hotels Investments shares at €0.80; 27,400 Malta International Airport shares between Lm0.94 and Lm0.912; 500 Global Financial Services shares between Lm1 and Lm0.999; 91,667 San Tumas Shareholdings plc shares between Lm0.75 and Lm0.70; and 37,929 Datatrak Holdings plc shares between Lm0.295 and Lm0.289.

Total Malta Government Stock turnover amounted to a nominal value of Lm733,200 being traded in 52 deals over 19 different stocks. Trading over the week in corporate bonds was made up of a total value of Lm55,228.
