I read with interest the report about the new Independent Schools Association requesting funds from the government as aid for parents who send their children to these schools.

The schools forming part of the association have the highest fees in Malta and almost all students attending them would have a good financial background.

If I had to choose a school for my children, I would first take into account my possibilities (income, bills, etc.) before making a decision. I find it very arrogant that such an association should request funding from the government. We cannot have a private company requesting funds simply to be able to offer the same service at a lower price. After all, the government has recently been doing away with subsidies.

If I had to buy a car, I would buy one that I could afford (not always the one I like most - usually I like big cars with big engines, which are very costly to keep).

And so it is for schools. If I could afford it, I would send my children to a private school but if not I would choose a Church or government school.

I hope no more of taxpayers' money will be spent for nothing.
