A total increase of 160 cases of general crime was registered last year when compared to 2015, according to information given in Parliament by Home Affairs Minister Carmelo Abela.
Replying to questions by PN deputy leader Beppe Fenech Adami, the minister said there were 17,587 cases in 2013, 16,653 in 2014, 17,138 in 2015 and 17,298 last year.
The highest number of cases in all of the four years were theft, followed by damage and domestic violence.
In 2014, there were two cases of abortion and two cases of people trafficking.
Between 2013 and last year, 20 homicides were reported.
The highest number of thefts in all fours years were through pick-pocketing followed by theft from cars. There were 109 armed robberies during the period.
There were also a number of thefts by employees in bars and restaurants, factories, hotels, offices and retail outlets.
