Roux: Auxerre coach Guy Roux announced yesterday he was ending his career after starting on the Burgundy side's bench in 1961. "I have decided to quit," Roux, 66, said a day after his side clinched their fourth French Cup with a 2-1 win over Sedan. "I am not retiring, I am just changing my activities."

Euro 2008: Voters in Zurich have approved the building of a new stadium for the 2008 European Championship. The local government's proposal to invest $87m of public money in the new Letzigrund stadium was backed by just over 75 per cent of voters. The vote will come as a welcome relief to the tournament's local organisers, particularly following the announcement on Friday that Geneva's Euro 2008 stadium is close to bankruptcy.

UEFA Cup places: Germany's FSV Mainz and a Danish club were awarded places in next season's UEFA Cup following the Fair Play draw last night. Sweden's Hammarby, Tulevik Viljandi of Estonia, England's Tottenham and Young Boys of Switzerland were also in the draw. The Danish club will be confirmed when their season ends on June 19. Norwegian side Viking FK had already been handed a place in the UEFA Cup after Norway finished top of the Fair Play league.

Martins: Striker Obafemi Martins scrambled a late equaliser to save Nigeria from a shock World Cup qualifying defeat in Rwanda yesterday. Martins beat the offside trap to slot home a goal on the breakaway with just 11 minutes left, earning Nigeria a 1-1 draw in the African zone World Cup Group Four qualifier. The result kept Nigeria top of the standings but only on goal difference from Angola.

US Win: Landon Donovan scored twice as the United States eased to a 3-0 victory over Costa Rica in their CONCACAF World Cup qualifier on Saturday. The win moved the US to second place behind Mexico in the six-team group and a step closer to a place at next year's World Cup.
