Intertoto Cup: Newcastle could very well face Deportivo in the semi-finals of the Intertoto Cup. The Premier League's only contenders in this year's summer quest for a UEFA Cup spot face Slovak minnows Dubnica in the third round. In the semi-finals, Newcastle will play either Deportivo or Slaven Koprivnica. Should Newcastle make it into the final phase, they will again face a daunting looking task with one of Lazio, Marseille or Young Boys providing the opposition.

Cagliari: Serie A side Cagliari named Attilio Tesser as their coach yesterday. The 47-year-old former boss of Serie B side Triestina has never coached in the top flight and replaces Daniele Arrigoni, who resigned last month.

Valencia: Valencia have signed Uruguayan international Fabian Estoyanoff on a five-year contract. "I am coming to a great club, known throughout the world, which is one of the best five teams in Europe," Estoyanoff said. The 22-year-old, who can play in midfield or as a forward, moves from Uruguayan side Fenix. He will spend next season on loan at La Liga newcomers Cadiz.

Zamalek hero: Captain Wael El Quabani rescued Zamalek of Egypt from a first-ever home defeat in continental club competition with a late equaliser in Sunday's African Champions League match against Tunisia's Etoile Sahel. The defender chipped the ball in four minutes into stoppage time to give Zamalek a 1-1 draw. Zamalek boast a 29-year-old record of never losing a home game in African club competition.

Ahn: South Korea striker Ahn Jung-hwan is set to join French club Metz on a one-year contract. Ahn has spent the last three seasons in Japan. The 29-year-old signed for Japan's Shimizu S-Pulse after the last World Cup following an acrimonious split with Italian club Perugia.

Corinthians: Argentina midfielder Javier Mascherano enjoyed a winning debut with Corinthians after his $15m move from River Plate as the side eased to a 3-1 win over Palmeiras in the Brazil championship. The game also marked Carlos Tevez's return to the side after playing for Argentina at the Confederations Cup in Germany last month.
