Appeals fail: Tottenham Hotspur's Egyptian midfielder Hossam Ghaly was handed a three-game suspension yesterday after the FA rejected the club's appeal over his red card against Blackburn on Sunday. Blackburn also had their appeal over a red card for Tugay rejected by an independent disciplinary commission hearing and the Turkish midfielder will serve a one-match ban.

Cruz: Inter striker Julio Ricardo Cruz faces a lengthy lay off after tests found he had suffered damage to the internal collateral ligament of his right knee. Cruz suffered the injury during Sunday's 1-0 Serie A win over Reggina.

Neville: Manchester United and England defender Gary Neville, who has endured a recurring calf problem for several months, could face surgery after developing pain in the other calf. "Had it just been one calf we would be giving it time, but because he's getting pain in the left one as well it suggests it's something different," Alex Ferguson said.

Diving: Torquay said yesterday they will start taking disciplinary action against any of their players who dive or feign injury. First time offenders will be warned, players who dive again will be fined and third time offenders sacked.

Brian Lara: West Indian captain Brian Lara became the fifth batsman in test history to score a century before lunch yesterday. Lara scored 100 from 77 balls on the third day of the second test against Pakistan in an extended session of two-and-a-half hours. Cricket historians record a century before lunch feat as one where a batsman goes from 0 to 100 in the morning session and it is the second time that the feat has been recorded on Pakistan soil. Former test captain, Majid Khan scored 107 before lunch on the first day of the third test against New Zealand at Karachi in 1976.
