A Mercedes E class and a C class, a Jeep Cherokee, a Mitsubishi Pajero, a few BMWs, Rovers and even a Volkswagen Transporter van will go under the hammer tomorrow, possibly for a fraction of their real cost, as they remained unclaimed after being impounded.
The 41 vehicles were imported between 2006 and 2008 and later impounded for being in breach of the Motor Vehicles Registration and Licensing Act.
The auction, conducted by Belgravia Auctioneers on behalf of Transport Malta, will be held tomorrow at 10 a.m. The vehicles are at Transport Malta's compound in Marsa and may be viewed between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. today.
Some have a starting price of just €50 and prices rise to €2,000. Even though over and above the hammer prices buyers will also be expected to pay the registration tax due to the transport watchdog for their importation, the price tags will probably still be mouth-watering for many.
The tax on a Mercedes C-Class is €2,308 and that for a Jeep Cherokee stands at €5,419. The most expensive tax bill is for a Fiat Ducato diesel van, which stands at €8,820.
Questions sent by The Times to Transport Malta, mainly to see what the funds raised from the auction will be used for, remained unanswered at the time of writing.
