A Tunisian illegal immigrant was yesterday charged with punching a man and smashing a bottle on his face during an argument at a bar in St Paul's Bay.

Hasan Ali Mohammed Abdel Raouf, residing at the Hal Far open centre, was charged with seriously injuring Saviour Cassar, from Qormi, when he allegedly punched him before smashing a bottle on his face.

The incident took place at The Lion Bar in St Paul's Bay in the early hours of yesterday morning.

The accused was further charged with violently resisting a police sergeant and two constables and with breaching the peace.

The man pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against him before Magistrate Audrey Demicoli. A request for bail was turned down and he was remanded in custody.

Police Inspector Paul Bond prosecuted.
