The problem of illegal migration from north Africa was the main topic of discussion today during a meeting between Foreign Minister Tonio Borg and his Italian counterpart Giulio Terzi in Rome.

The two ministers promised to work towards more effective collaboration in search and rescue and improve channels of communication and consultation to prevent tragedies at sea.

They called for EU commitment to help manage the problem and agreed to maintain close consultation on the many initiative already being taken in the EU.

They also agreed on the resumption of contacts for the definition of their respective continental shelves.
