Finance Minister Tonio Fenech said today that he would not obstruct the divorce law in Parliament.

“People voted for divorce, and it is parliament’s duty to have the law the people want. I will not be there to obstruct it,” Mr Fenech said.

“It’s important the law passes.”

He did not say, however, how he would be voting.

“In the referendum, people voted in favour, against, and some didn’t vote. I expect this to also happen in Parliament,” Mr Fenech told reporters.

“For me, conscience comes first and foremost, even in the decision whether I stay in politics or not, but that’s something I have to live with,” the minister, who had spoken strongly against the introduction of divorce said.

On Sunday and yesterday, Mr Fenech and other ministers had evaded questions by journalists on how they would be voting in parliament.
