Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said this morning he will take the decisions which needed to be taken “without fear or favour in the best interest of the people”.

Speaking at a dialogue meeting in Marsa he called on the public not to lose faith.

“We will come out stronger once these weeks are over past because we are on the side of the truth..,” he said.

Dr Muscat was referring to a shooting incident a few weeks ago during which the Home Affairs Minister driver shot at a car which hit the ministerial car. The government that evening issued a statement saying warning shots in the air were fired.

The Nationalist Party media on Friday issued ‘transcripts’ of telephone calls which had taken place. Times of Malta this morning released an audio recording revealing that it was the Police Commissioner who first told told the Prime Minister’s communications chief that 'warning shots' were fired.

Dr Muscat said the government understood that the people expected better from everyone.

“This is not an arrogant government, this is a government that listens and takes action where necessary.

“I will take the necessary action once I have all the facts in hand,” Dr Muscat said.

The inquiry, the Prime Minister said, would be concluded tomorrow and once he received the report he would read it, take the decisions which had to be taken, publish it and move forward.

“We learn from our mistakes… we do not throw things under the carpet but take all necessary action and show people we can improve,” he said.

Dr Muscat said that while he did not want to discuss the content of the transcripts at this point, the people expected better not just from the government but also from the Opposition, which spent the past week preaching honesty.

But as he called on the Prime Minister to say the whole truth and nothing but the true, the Opposition leader was lying, Dr Muscat said.

This, he said, could be seen from the recordings published by the independent media this morning, including Times of Malta, which showed that Dr Busuttil, who managed the PN's media, had left critical parts out.

While Dr Busuttil attacked the judiciary saying they were part of a cover up, he became part of a cover up himself by hiding crucial information.

“I will not allow anyone to play with the integrity and honesty of this movement we have built over the years,” Dr Muscat said.
