A Polish IT professional who went to the Qawra police station in a drunken state asking to buy batteries for his wireless mouse not only infuriated his wife but also landed in court yesterday.

After 31-year-old Lucas Gozdzikrewicz was conditionally discharged for two years, his wife told Police Inspector Therese Sciberras that although the court had not punished him, “I will”.

Mr Gozdzikrewicz, who is so tall he was at eye level with Magistrate Claire Stafrace Zammit sitting at her raised bench, stood in the dock and could be seen shaking slightly as he pleaded guilty and expressed remorse at doing something so stupid.

The incident happened on Tuesday night when, after drinking a litre and a half of whisky, he wanted to buy batteries from the police station, Ms Sciberras said. The officers on duty explained the place was not a shop and he left, only to return and become violent, she testified. The officers placed him in a cell but as he was being restrained he injured an officer’s hand.

The following morning he was a completely different person and apologised profusely to the police officers, the inspector said.

In court yesterday, he apologised again and said he should have never drunk alcohol on an empty stomach.

Magistrate Stafrace Zammit took into consideration the circumstances of the case, that he had a clean police record and that he was genuinely sorry before conditionally discharging him for two years.

As the accused was leaving the courtroom, his wife told the police inspector that although the magistrate had not given her husband a punishment she would!
