A young man is looking for companies willing to bet he would run around the Maltese coast in 10 hours, with the funds raised going to charity.

Jerome Lefebre will turn 33 on February 28 and he is planning on celebrating his birthday with an ultra-marathon in aid of the Malta Community Chest Fund.

He is, therefore, looking for sponsors willing to pay a certain amount of money for every kilometre he completes and, to spice things up, he is proposing they multiply the amount if he makes it within 10 hours.

We often waste so much of our time, in front of the TV or elsewhere, when we could be doing something that can contribute to the good of society

Mr Lefebre, from Luxembourg, told this newspaper he has taken part in other marathons in the past but this was the first time he was committing to raise funds in aid of charity on his own. And it does not seem it will be the last.

Mr Lefebre lost his grandfather to cancer and believes everyone knows or has met someone battling the terrible condition. He decided to raise funds for the Malta Community Chest Fund because it also supports cancer patients and their relatives.

His daunting February challenge and the nature of the sponsorship he is looking for, which reflects the nature of his job within the betting industry, is keeping Mr Lefebre, who has been living in Malta for the past two years, on track when it comes to training. In fact, he trains daily before breakfast.

He said that becoming father to Amelia this summer made him even more resolute in making the best of his free time.

“We often waste so much of our time, in front of the TV or elsewhere, when we could be doing something that can contribute to the good of society,” he said.

Apart from training for the big day, Mr Lefebre now has five months to find companies willing to support him and contribute towards his chosen cause.

In return, he promises to promote the sponsors on the social media, where people can also follow him during his 110-kilometre challenge.
