A man who allegedly stabbed his estranged wife and then turned the knife on himself was charged in court and denied trying to kill her and slightly injuring her new partner.

Kevin Micallef, 35, from Żurrieq appeared in court with cuts around his eyes and sutures to his upper nose.

The couple, who have a five-year-old girl, had been arguing about separation proceedings when the fight turned violent last Friday at around 10.30 p.m. in Birkirkara.

The wife, Evelyn Micallef, is still in critical condition in hospital, having been stabbed in her stomach, Police Inspector Chris Pullicino said.

Mr Micallef was also given hospital treatment.

He today pleaded not guilty to trying to kill his wife, slightly injuring her new partner, slightly injuring a 15-year-old boy, illegally carrying a knife and harassing her.

Lawyer Albert Zerafa requested bail and said that the fact his client was suicidal, keeping him in prison would only serve to push him over the edge.

Inspector Pullicino said that it was precisely the reason he should not be let free to roam the streets when his wife is recovering in hospital and unable to defend herself.

He should be given treatment and kept in the appropriate place, he added.

Magistrate Giovanni Grixti remanded the accused in custody.
