A 60-year-old prostitute and her 25-year-old husband have been sentenced to six months in jail suspended for two years after they pleaded guilty to running a brothel at their Testaferrata Street flat in Gzira.
Theresa Cutajar and Emleti Mohamed Saad admitted to living off the earning of prostitution in August and the preceding months. Ms Cutajar alone also admitted to loitering for prostitution purposes.
The couple had pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against them but decided to change their plea during the compilation of evidence against them.
The police had raided the apartment after a prostitute, arrested for loitering, admitted to the police that she was selling her body for money and operated from the flat belonging to the husband and wife. During investigations other two prostitutes also admitting to seeing to clients’ needs at the pair’s flat.
A search on the apartment yielded a sizeable bag of condoms and other sex-related items including several sex toys.
Standing before Magistrate Doreen Clarke, the couple were given a six-month jail term suspended for two years after the prosecution and defence agreed on the punishment. They were also fined €400 each and ordered to pay €817 each to cover court expenses.
Police Inspector Jason Sultana prosecuted while lawyer Joseph Arrigo appeared for the accused.
