The government’s decision to suspend the hunting season was not based on any evidence of increased illegalities and could have set a very dangerous precedent, according to the Ornis committee chairman.

Mark Anthony Falzon told Times of Malta he disagreed with the government’s decision to suspend the autumn hunting season, as this was not based on proof of escalated illegalities.

“This was, by all accounts, a drastic solution. And, for a government to justify such a decision it better have an argument backed up by statistics. So far, it has not produced any such information,” Prof. Falzon said.

The 20-day freeze of the season ended today and hunters were out in force this morning. A reader said on the Times of Malta Facebook page that hunters' shooting in Gozo was so intense, it was 'like the Iraq  war'.

"I am in Xlendi, it was really like a war here," he said.
