Hunters have expressed concern with the Home Affairs Ministry in the wake of a European Commission proposal to review the Firearms Directive.

In a statement this afternoon, the hunters’ federation, FKNK, said the Commission was rushing the proposal, to further restrict the lawful possession of firearms, in view of last Friday’s tragic events in Paris.

FACE, the European Federation of Associations for Hunting and Conservation, of which the FKNK is a member, supported the Commission’s initiatives in the fight against terrorism and illegal practices but questioned how the Commission’s proposal to further restrict the lawful possession of firearms by hunters and sports shooters would prevent terrorists from committing atrocities.

“Illegally manufactured and/or trafficked firearms are readily available from the black market within the EU or from outside its borders,” FACE said.

The FKNK said that on behalf of its members, who numbered more than 10,000, it had already voiced its concern with the Home Affairs Ministry.
