Some 200 skiers were lowered down to safety from a cable car in the Italian Dolomites yesterday after winds of up to 130 kilometres per hour hit the area.

The cable car at Ciampinoi in the Val Gardena was deemed unsafe after the high winds blew a tree over the cable.

Rescue teams were lowered down from helicopters onto some 20 cable car cabins which had been drawn to a halt at about 30 metres above ground.

No injuries were reported.
