As many as 670 drivers may have had their driving licence upgraded to other categories without them having sat for a test, Transport Minister Austin Gatt revealed in parliament this evening.

He said the cases happened between 2006 and last year. Investigations are underway by the police and Transport Malta.

Dr Gatt told Labour MP Joe Mizzi that so far the changes had been found justified in 42 cases.

The cases also included the issue of Maltese licences instead of licences issued in the EU or Australia, and other cases where the details of the holders were changed and did not appear on the computerised system.
