A prominent niche with the statue of St Joseph dating back to 1891 has been restored with funds from HSBC Malta.

The niche, standing on a one-storey dwelling in Valletta Road in Mqabba is a landmark of historical importance and is included on one of the four heritage routes recommended by the local council.

The restoration was financed through HSBC's ongoing programme to support local councils in improving their community's environment.

"Mqabba brims with niches and other characteristic features of architectural value which unless they receive the attention they need in terms of maintenance and restoration our community risks losing them for good," said mayor Noel Galea. "This is a costly task which we won't be able to see to unless we get the necessary funding, and we are very grateful for HSBC's help and support."
