HSBC's Ħamrun branch is back to business following three months of extensive refurbishment works.

Centrally located over 300 square metres, the Ħamrun branch is an important part of HSBC Malta's extensive branch network.

The upgrade is part of a major transformational programme taking place throughout HSBC's local branch network with an investment of €8 million to be completed in five years.

The branch has been reorganised to allow improved customer relationship for personalised services and advice in a more secure and private environment. In-house surveys show that customers are more willing to visit branches to seek financial solutions tailored to their specific needs, like financial planning, mortgages and investments, or to discuss their business.

While branches remain a critical part of HSBC's multi channel delivery, only five per cent of conventional banking transactions are actually carried out over the counter in branches: 95 per cent are effected through automated or back-office channels, HSBC Malta chief executive Alan Richards told guests at the inauguration.

"Branches remain key to our relationship with our customers although behaviour is changing. This year we have again seen an increased usage for all automated services, from ATMs, to card payments and internet banking," Mr Richards said.

"Online banking alone registered a 10 per cent increase last year and the trend continues this year with a 1,000 new registered users each month."

A recent survey also revealed that one in every four of the Maltese adult population said they were confident to buy goods and services online, making the Maltese one of the most internet savvy populations in Europe.

From Monday to Friday, the Ħamrun branch opening hours are extended for personal financial planning advice from 4 to 7 p.m.
