Andrew Ripley, until now deputy chief executive officer at HSBC's UK division of Marks and Spencers Money, has been appointed head of personal financial services at HSBC Malta.

Mr Ripley replaces Godfrey Swain who has this week taken up his new appointment as head of personal financial services for HSBC Japan.

Mr Swain is now the highest ranking Maltese with HSBC Group.

Mr Ripley joined the HSBC Group in 1987 in the UK as a graduate from Manchester University. He is a qualified accountant and spent his early career in finance and subsequently has specialised in personal banking.

Mr Swain will be based in Tokyo with a responsibility to develop a premium personal banking service in Japan, based on the group's flagship, top-end Premier personal banking proposition.

"I am delighted to welcome Andy to the team in Malta - his extensive background in retail banking will be of real benefit to our business in Malta," HSBC Malta chief executive officer Alan Richards said.

"Godfrey Swain's posting to Japan recognises the major contribution he has made to the bank in Malta over the past few years and is a well-deserved opportunity for him to broaden his experience within the HSBC Group."
