The HSBC Malta Foundation is enlivening the Christmas spirit at Mount Carmel Hospital’s Young People’s Unit by supporting the activities during the festive period.

HSBC has been helping YPU for the past eight years with funds donated to the unit being used to hold social activities for the young residents. Residents are also taken on various outings including a trip to the Christmas pantomime. Another part of the funds goes towards purchasing material used to create crafts and decorations to make the place more cheerful for the season.

Foundation director Josef Camilleri said: “The Christmas season can be particularly challenging both for young people undergoing treatment and their families. Through our support, we hope to bring some Christmas cheer to these patients.”

The YPU host patients aged between 12 and 16 with psychological, emotional and behavioural problems. They come from different backgrounds. Residents and day patients undergo a multidisciplinary and integrated programme, tailor-made around their needs. The programme aims at identifying their problem, helping the young patients work on the weaknesses while making them aware of and promoting their strengths, thus helping them to reintegrate into society. The programme which covers psychological, social and behavioural and academic aspects, includes occupational therapy sessions and craft lessons to further enhance the skills the youths have.

Led by nursing officer Marion Saliba, the team at YPU comprises, consultants, nurses, psychologist, social worker, occupational therapists, teacher and learning support assistants who liaise together to offer the best care possible for residents.
