Stephen Green will leave his post as chairman of banking titan HSBC to become the trade minister in Britain's new coalition government, the BBC reported today.

"Stephen Green, chairman of HSBC, is quitting to become trade minister in the coalition government," the BBC's business editor Robert Peston wrote in his online blog.

"The announcement of his appointment will be made this afternoon."

HSBC declined to comment on the report.

Mr Green was last March interviewed by timesofmalta.com .
