Gozo is benefiting not only from Maltese tourism. We have learned that, this year, more than 500 people have 'migrated' to Gozo with their ID card.
This could be for two reasons: politics and the Gozo Channel ferry.
If it is a political ploy by party activists to ensure that their party (Nationalist) retains the third seat, or their party (Labour) wins the third seat, nothing can be done. On a national level, their vote counts just the same.
But regarding the other reason - the fact that being officially resident in Gozo, they would be paying the lower ferry fares charged to Gozitans - there is a simple solution: for a Maltese person to benefit from this, he only has to present the contract of sale to show he is the owner of a property in Gozo. Then Gozo Channel can issue an identity card.
If this is done, and this is not a political ploy, Maltese 'migration' to Gozo will surely diminish.
