In the UK, 95 per cent of all road accidents are caused by human error and this statistic is almost certainly correct for Malta. What can we, the drivers, do to reduce the unacceptable number of crashes seen on our roads here in Malta?

Speaking as a road safety consultant, with many years of experience, we could start by analysing our own driving. Ask yourself the following questions and if you answer yes to any, then you are at risk of being involved in a crash.

1. Do you often have to brake hard to avoid a crash? If yes, are you looking far enough ahead and anticipating the potential actions of other road users?

2. Have you been overtaken and didn't know anyone was following you? If yes, how often do you check your mirrors?

3. Do you ever drive and talk on your mobile phone? If yes, you cannot concentrate on driving safely.

4. Do you ever drink (any amount of alcohol) and drive? If yes, then you need to give yourself a good talking to.

5. Do you allow passengers to travel unrestrained in your vehicle? If yes, this would not increase your chances of a crash, BUT will certainly exacerbate the injuries sustained by both the passengers and the driver. A two-year-old child would strike the front seat occupants with the same force as a baby elephant.

I hope this helps. We should try to make every journey a safer one for all our sakes. Let's all work together to make Malta's roads safer.
