Housing Authority procedures will be audited to address shortcomings for the authority to become transparent, accountable and efficient, Social Solidarity Minister Marie Louise Coleiro-Preca said.

Speaking during a visit to the authority’s offices in Floriana, she said the authority currently had 3,000 pending cases. In some cases, the applicants had been waiting 15 years for a social housing unit. Pending applications would be scrutinised for justice to be done with these vulnerable persons.

The minister said the authority had also been left without money and because of lack of planning it did not even have the necessary funds to pay wages as from April.

However, the new government was determined to ensure the authority’s financial stability.

She said that a new board will be appointed and the government will announce its strategy for housing as soon as the auditing process is over.
