Victoria Hotspurs notched up a 2-0 win over Sannat Lions to move closer to the Division One title.

The Hotspurs struggled in the first period as it was Sannat who had the best scoring opportunities, especially on 16 minutes when a low drive by John Camilleri hit the base of the post.

It was only in the final stages of the opening half that Victoria gained control.

They opened the scoring seven minutes into the second half. A close-range attempt by Martin Hanus was initially blocked by the Sannat defence but the Czech striker scored from the rebound.

The Hotspurs were now firmly in the driving seat, putting more pressure on the Lions in search of a second goal. With 12 minutes left, Sannat's hopes of an equaliser suffered a setback when substitute Frank Debono was sent off for an off-the-ball incident.

The title favourites sealed their win in the first minute of stoppage time when Eric Nkwankwo hit home from close range after Hanus's header had hit the post.

Għajnsielem maintained their title hopes alive with a dramatic 3-2 win over SK Victoria Wanderers.

The Blacks saw more of the ball in the first half but their efforts were controlled by the Wanderers who managed to take the lead thanks to Ajibade Adesina seven minutes from half-time.

Għajnsielem started the second half on the attack and leveled the scores on 64 minutes thanks to Thiago Dos Santos.

Victoria should have regained their lead soon after but Manwel Cordina missed three excellent chances.

Nineteen minutes from time, Għajnsielem moved in front through an own goal by Mark Buttigieg who turned the ball into his own net as he tried to clear an effort by Dos Santos.

The Wanderers thought they had rescued a point when Ige Adesina scored from a corner in stoppage time but Għajnsielem refused to give in.

They went all out in search of the winner and their efforts were rewarded in the sixth minute of injury time. Ferdinando Apap found the net with an angled drive after a goalmouth melee.

In another Division One match, Xewkija Tigers safeguarded their status with a 2-1 victory over bottom side Kerċem Ajax.

Xewkija took the lead on 31 minutes when Basil Chibueze scored from a penalty. The dominant Tigers doubled their lead on the hour, Rodney Buttigieg lobbing the ball into the net.

Kerċem pulled one back eight minutes later through Milos Stojanovic but they rarely troubled the Xewkija keeper until the final whistle.

Division Two

In the only match from the second division last weekend, Oratory Youths beat Qala St Joseph 3-0 to join Munxar and Żebbuġ in third place.

Joseph Grech scored a brace in the first half to pave the way for Oratory's win. Substitute George Frank Mizzi made sure of the points with a third goal eight minutes from time.
