Victoria Hotspurs and Għajnsielem, the leading contenders for the league title in Gozo this season, kept up their march at the top of the standings following victories over SK Victoria Wanderers and Sannat Lions respectively last weekend.

The Hotspurs scored twice in the early stages to win the derby 3-1 and retain their three-point advantage over the Blacks.

Ryan Grech opened the scoring in the 10th minute and Eric Nkwankwo made it 2-0 five minutes later after winning a tussle with two defenders.

The Hotspurs failed to maintain their early tempo but they still had chances to increase their lead towards the end of the first half following efforts by Martin Hanus and Nkwankwo.

The Wanderers hit their best patch during the second period.

On the hour, Hotspurs keeper Grima was called to effect a good save to stop a shot by Ajibade Adesina and six minutes from time, substitute Lauran Dimech pulled one back after an inviting ball from Ige Adesina.

However, the Hotspurs soon re-established their two-goal lead when the referee awarded them a penalty for a foul on Nkwankwo.

Hanus converted from the spot to make sure of the points.

Għajnsielem had to fight hard to beat champions Sannat who are now mired in relegation trouble.

The Lions were the more enterprising side but the Blacks scored the goal that mattered from an Alex Simoncic free-kick on 49 minutes.

Sannat were shocked and Għajnsielem would have sealed the issue earlier had it not been for Lions keeper Paul Galea who kept his side in contention with some fine saves from efforts by Thiago Dos Santos, Rodrigo Cariaga and Kenneth Mercieca.

Meanwhile, Xewkija Tigers moved out of the relegation zone after beating fellows-in-distress Kerċem Ajax 1-0.

Kerċem saw more of the ball but Xewkija were dangerous from counter-breaks, led by Basil Chibueze and Joseph Cefai.

Kerċem had a Milos Stojanovic effort from a corner cleared over the line by Cefai and at the other end, Xewkija hit the winner 10 minutes from time from a penalty, awarded for a foul on Rodney Buttigieg and converted by Chibueze.

Six minutes from time, Kerċem had Daniel Sakic sent off.

Division Two

St Lawrence Spurs and Xagħra United completed their second round commitments with victories over Oratory Youths and Żebbuġ Rovers respectively.

The Spurs beat Oratory 2-1 in a difficult match. The latter dictated matters during the first period but failed to finish off the chances that fell to Dione Lautier and George Caruana.

The Saints forged ahead in the 19th minute through Gothard Conti who headed home a rebound from underneath the bar.

Oratory hit back and levelled the score on 53 minutes through Kevin Grech but St Lawrence clinched the points with a Paul Anthony Attard goal in stoppage time.

Xagħra beat Żebbuġ 4-0. The superior Blues took command after Żebbuġ were reduced to 10 players on 14 minutes following a red card to Mario Calleja.

Xagħra, however, only managed to convert their superiority into goals after the break.

Philip Attard put them ahead on 51 minutes and Anthony Bajada made it 2-0 soon after. Joseph Mercieca was on the mark on 72 minutes and an own goal by Josmar Farrugia made the final score 4-0.

Played yesterday: Sannat vs Nadur 2-2; Xewkija vs Għajnsielem 2-2.
