The harmonised consumer price index dropped sharply last month over October, the National Statistics Office said yesterday, attributing the decrease to a fall of almost 14 per cent in hotel and restaurant prices.

The price index for hotels and restaurants dropped by 13.8 per cent as a result of seasonal reductions, the NSO said, and the transport index dropped by 1.2 per cent.

A downward shift of 1.1 per cent was also recorded in the food and non-alcoholic beverages index, mainly on account of lower prices in fish and vegetables.

The NSO said the alcoholic beverages and tobacco index went up by 3.4 per cent due to higher tobacco prices. Seasonal price increases of garments caused the clothing and footwear index to rise by 2.7 per cent.
