Silvio Camilleri, 29 of Gzira,  pleaded not guilty today to stealing a camera worth 1,900 pounds sterling as well as an ipad and medicines from a Romanian tourist's hotel room.

Oana Seres told the court that she arrived in Malta on Friday night with her husband. They went to a money exchange and on returning to the hotel - St George's Park in Paceville - they found their room door open. A back-pack was missing.

Among the missing items were a Nikon D-90 camera, an ipad, medicines and other things.

She identified the back-pack in court after it was produced by the police.

Ms Seres asked the court to order the accused to return her driving licence and identity card because she lived in London and was leaving the island.

The court said she could not ask the accused anything because he had a right to silence.

Mr Camilleri also stands accused of another theft from another room.

Inspector Trevor Micallef said the accused was caught by the hotel's security staff trying to break into another hotel room.
