The hotel occupancy rate was up over seven per cent in August compared to the same month in 2009 as the number of guests increased by nearly 17 per cent.

The National Statistics Office said accommodation establishments were 85.1 per cent full and occupancy rates increased in all hotel categories, especially two and three-star hotels.

While the number of bed places increased by 323 over last August, there was a 16.9 per cent rise in the number of people staying in hotels and guesthouses.

The total number of nights spent rose by 10.7 per cent although the average length of stay went down slightly to stand at 7.1 nights.

Hotels experienced a 12.4 per cent decline in the number of locals staying in August as well in the average nights they spent, at 2.7.
