Arrivals in hotels in June stood at 136,715, up by 6.7 per cent when compared to the corresponding month last year.
 
The National Statistics Office said non-resident arrivals and nights amounted to 126,432 and 765,605 respectively, with an average length of stay of 6.1 nights. Both figures were up by 9.4 and 2.3 per cent respectively over 2010.

On the other hand, arrivals by local residents and nights registered decreases of 17.9 per cent and 21.3 per cent respectively.

The 4-star hotel category recorded the highest increase in the number of total arrivals and stood at 65,424 (Table 1). Although the overall number of arrivals
rose when compared to last year, the number of nights spent in collective accommodation establishments declined marginally. In fact, the average length of stay was 0.2 of a night lower from June 2010.

The net occupancy rate in collective accommodation establishments was estimated at 69.4 per cent, an increase of 2.8 percentage points when compared to last year.

The 2-star hotel category experienced an increase in the occupancy rate for residents (4.3 per cent), and a decrease in the rate for non-residents (32.5 per cent).

Regional Overview

Total arrivals in Malta amounted to 128,786, an increase of 6.8 per cent over last year. The number of nights spent in Malta went up by 1.6 per cent to 756,221. However, the average length of stay edged down by 0.3 of a night.

In Gozo and Comino, both arrivals and nights recorded upward trends when compared with 2010 levels, and stood at 7,930 and 30,661 respectively. In June, the occupancy rate was 69.8 per cent in Malta and 60.4 per cent in Gozo and
Comino. When compared to June 2010, there was a significant increase in the occupancy rate for non-residents in Gozo and Comino, which was calculated at 46.0 per cent. On the other hand, the net use of bed places for residents declined both in Malta and in Gozo and Comino.

Capacity

On a national basis, the number of bedrooms and bed-places totalled 17,692 and 37,815 respectively. Bed-places in Malta accounted for 95.5 per cent of the total for collective accommodation establishments. In Gozo and Comino, the number of bedrooms stood at 815.
