Less than half of medical treatment given in Malta to non-EU nations went unpaid, despite being billed, information given in Parliament shows.

Between 2008 and August this year, Gozo General Hospital issued bills for a total value of €261,253 but only €25,265 was paid.

Mater Dei Hospital issued bills for a total of €2.52 million, yet only €1.27 million was  ever paid up.

At Mt Carmel Hospital, only €27,032 were paid from invoices totalling €660,318 while at Karen Grech Rehabilitation Hospital no payments at all were made, despite bills totalling €37,922 being issued.

Health Minister Godfrey Farrugia, who gave the information in parliament to a question by Nationalist MP Claudio Grech, said this showed the mismanagement of the billing section.
