Horses, ponies and even goats and chickens, were removed in a flurry of activity near the Marsa racetrack this morning as Lands Department officials moved in to clear illegally-built paddocks.

Officials said that eviction notices were served in June at some 40 paddocks built on government land, but the tenants had waited until the officials turned up before starting to remove the animals.

The illegal structures are to be demolished.
