A man’s hopes of reconciliation with his partner, despite a court order barring him from approaching the woman, have landed him once again behind bars.

The 25-year old Fgura resident was arrested and marched to court on Saturday facing charges of threatening and harassing his ex, causing her to fear violence. He was further charged with aggravated theft to the detriment of his ex, as well as with having breached bail conditions.

He had already admitted to similar charges less than one month ago. On October 11, he pleaded guilty to harassment, threats, blackmail and slight injuries against the woman, and was granted bail under strict orders not to lay foot in Żejtun, where he had previously lived with his partner.

But just three days later, the woman had allegedly called him and rekindled his hope of a reconciliation. Communication between the couple allegedly resumed.

The two were due to meet on Friday, but the woman allegedly went out with a friend instead. The two allegedly called up the accused man and taunted him over the phone.

He is alleged to have angrily headed over to her house, where he allegedly took an internet card she owned. He later called her and threatened her over the phone, a court was told.

This chain of events led to the man’s arrest and ultimately his arraignment on Saturday.

Defence lawyer Alfred Abela asked the court, presided over by magistrate Natasha Galea Sciberras, to appoint a technical expert who would collect all possible evidence from the parties’ mobile phones, including any recordings of phone calls between the man and his ex.

The court remanded the man in custody after turning down a request for bail.

Senior Inspector Melvyn Camilleri prosecuted. Lawyer Keith Borg was also defence counsel.
