A freight train carrying hazardous liquids has derailed in far north-western New York state, prompting the evacuation of several homes.

Governor Andrew Cuomo said the train was travelling on the Norfolk Southern line near the town of Ripley when about 15 carriages derailed at around 11.30pm local time on Tuesday.

There are no immediate reports of injuries or fire. But at least three of the derailed cars contain hazardous liquids, including ethanol, and at least one is leaking.

Mr Cuomo said emergency crews had evacuated several homes, while other residents near the site have been urged to "shelter in place".

WGRZ-TV put the number of evacuated homes at 45.

Ripley is located in western Chautauqua County near Lake Erie, about 10 miles from the Pennsylvania border.
