It is fair to record that voluntary work with people with disabilities started nearly 50 years ago. The Malta Welfare Society for the Mentally Handicapped opened the first Day Centre for the Mentally Handicapped as long ago as that, an occasion honoured by the presence of Sir Anthony and the late Lady Mamo, and by the then Minister, President Emeritus Censu Tabone (picture). Many of the volunteers who ran the paid Monday Club, including a number of British expatriates, have passed away and I feel it my duty to pay homage to my said fellow volunteers.
