The theatrical company Dumnikani Beltin has been meticulously producing Holy Week theatre productions since 1974. For over 45 years these religious productions depict the Passion, death and Resurrection of Christ as well as provide an annual gathering for avid theatregoers.

Dumnikani Beltin can be considered one of the oldest theatre companies specialising in the productions related to the Passion of Jesus Christ. This year’s Passion production Faxex has a direct link with one of the main characters. Bandages are used to heal and cover up as well as tighten. Sin is linked with the creation of humanity and the way it can bend somebody’s will to act righteously. This metaphor in the use of bandages depicts our struggles and temptations.

Will these bandages ever loosen up? Who could possibly help loosen our bandages which trap our sinful soul?

The plot of Faxex revolves around a dear friend of Jesus, Lazarus and his family. The script by Etienne Micallef, also includes scenes from the Resurrection as well as the moment the apostles are blessed by the Holy Spirit and given their mission to spread the word of Jesus among mankind. Lazarus and his family are portrayed as the first people to spread Jesus’ teachings.

What will Lazarus’ destiny be? What will happen to his dear family? Will the Pharisees manage to get hold of Lazarus and project him as a fraud? How did Lazarus manage to infiltrate Pontius Pilate’s fortress? What will be the next move? Stage direction is entrusted to Frank Micallef, a veteran in the direction and production of Holy Week stage ensembles.

This drama production evokes the emotional events of Good Friday and the Resurrection, the most important events of Christianity within the side lines of Jesus’ mysterious life.

Faxex is being staged on Monday and Wednesday at 7.15pm and on Good Friday at 9.30am. All shows will be held at St Dominic’s Hall, Merchants Street, Valletta. Tickets can be bought from Joe Zammit on 9945 1909.
