The father of the hit-and-run driver who was yesterday charged in court with breaching a six-month driving ban has filed an application in the Magistrates' Court for his car to be released.

Maximilian Ciantar, who last year mowed down 11-year-old twins, was allegedly caught driving a pink Toyota Vitz in Hamrun on Wednesday. The car belonged to Mr Ciantar's father Emanuel.

In his application, Mr Ciantar referred to a law which considers the confiscation of a vehicle belonging to a member of the family as a violation of human rights.

He said his son was accused of driving his car without a licence and insurance. However, he was not accused of anything and any confiscation against him was a form of conviction which did not make sense.

For how could he, as the father, pay for a crime allegedly committed by his son.

Moreover, his son was not a minor and he was not responsible for his actions.

The application was signed by Dr Joseph Brincat.
